This is a vibe magazine contents page. It is very plain which is very common in most Vibe magazines.

The writing is clearly not meant to be the main aspect of the page as it is very small and only covers a small area. This allows the contents to tell the readers what will be in the magazine and also shows most of the picture which also helps to allow the reader to see what type of magazine it is. It is also essential for magazines to attract other types of audiences to increase sales by attracting a wider audience.

The main image is of the artist "Movado" who is not particularly famous in the Hip Hop genre. He makes music which attracts a niche audience so for this reason it is unusual that he is in the main image. This is very effective as it is attracting audiences from mainstream and niche side of the spectrum. In the main image we see "Movado" the model in the main image posing in a conventional manner to artist on other Hip Hop magazines. He is wearing an expensive chain showing he is like other Hip Hop artists who have a reputation for being rich. In addition, he is also wearing other props like diamond bracelets and a watch, a Gucci belt which also connotes wealth and associates the artist to the Hip Hop genre. However this contrasts with the background. The background consists of a ghetto area. The use of black and white to present the background image creates a sombre and depressing environment. This shows the audience that no matter where you come from you can achieve and make something of yourself just like “Movado”. All the props and pieces of costume make suggests the artist’s performance genre. This is also another way of promoting him. Looking at the models facial expressions he looks as if he is drugged which is unusual for Vibe to be using as they would not normally use a model like this. This contrasts with the image in the front cover as T.I is looking serious. Another image used in the contents page is of the front cover. This is unconventional feature in a magazine contents page as not many if any magazines display their front cover in the contents page. The magazine editors use a juxtaposition to show that two different types of artists have made it to the industry therefore encouraging and attracting people from different classes to buy this magazine and learn from their success. This contents page is more visual than textual; I believe this has been done to show attract a young audience.

Overall looking at all the analysis I have done I strongly believe the Vibe magazines contents page is unusual in that it is very simple and unconventional. It is very effective as the images speak for itself and the text is less important.
